Here's a new Revver rule (or at least to me). Some friends were over today and made a video called "Brotherly Love," which features them attacking each other. I taught them about Revver, and we rescored the music with non-copyright music. They were excited to post their first Revver video, and waited and waited.

Finally they got a "no click solicitation" message. As you'll see from this version on YouTube, the video ends (in jest) with a message that says "please click ad to pay for our medical bills."

Let this be a warning. No asking for clicks!

A sobering review of Revver by Sci-Tech Today that points out the solid business model but lack of popularity and content. Here's the most important point the article makes:

To solve its problem, Revver needs a bigger audience to submit, watch, and rate videos. That way, the most-watched category will have more variety, and users will be able to find higher quality videos there, which would garner better ratings. More clips would also keep the recent-updates section dynamic, preventing individual submitters from dominating the space for the day... Offering to split advertising revenue is apparently not enough to attract the needed audience. This could be because not enough people are clicking on the ads to make submitting videos very lucrative...Unfortunately, the success of social networking sites shows that one of the biggest ways to attract an audience is to have an audience that talks about the site and likes it and recommends it to friends. Revver needs to do something to get people talking about it positively.

Fair points. All remedied by a soon-to-come "fashion makeover" and (I hope) some investment in promoting the site. The article overlooks that Revver is trying to be a facilitator not a portal, and mistakenly calls it a "two-year-old" company when the beta's been live for under a year and the actual site hasn't launched. But it makes some fair points about the "hit or miss" content.

Now... did you think I was going to blog about this piece without some self promotion? Here's another part of the article...

On a recent visit to the two-year-old site, there were only 21,106 videos in a database, according to a ticker at the top of the site. YouTube, by comparison, has roughly 70 million. And of the videos that Revver does have, few are entertaining or informative, and they often tend to come from the same batch of contributors. ... There was, however, an entertaining video in the editor's-picks section called "The Revver Interns" in which a man orders around kids all seemingly under age seven. At one point, one of the kids is picking his nose, and the man asks, "Are you picking me a winner?" At another point, the kids get into a shouting match about sales. It was a cute concept that led the video to receive nearly 600 views. Many other clips had far less.

P.S. The author must have kids. They are indeed under 7.

This just in. Revver expands series B funding round by adding Comcast Interactive Capital and Turner Broadcasting as new investors. Revver will use the funding for market expansion, team-building, and technology development. Comcast and Turner join Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Bessemer Venture Partners, Draper Richards, and William Randolph Hearst III as investors in the firm.

At the time of this writing, neither Revver nor Comcast Interactive Capital had information on their news section. However Miki's keeping us current on Revver's Blog. Revverberation's motto for Micki: Twice the charm, three times the speed and 1/10th the price of a PR agency.

According to TVWeek, "Revver declined to disclose the amount from either company or the total for that round. However, the company said it has raised $12.7 million total to date."

So here's the deal. Revver's always nice. Each one of 'em. They won't slam YouTube, they won't even compare themself.

But I'm not a Revver employee. I'm just some clown with a couple blogs about online video. So I can say it.

Revver has a sustainable business model. YouTube doesn't. What YouTube has is the lion's share of the online video traffic, and white hot media buzz.

YouTube's bubble needs to pop, so we can get on with the next generation of online video. The longer this puffery lasts, the longer it will take for the real businesses to emerge. When they do pop, it will freak the whole online-video market out temporarily. And I want to get that over with. Anyone else?

There aren't many technical ways to stop "keyword jamming*," but it sure is annoying. It's one thing to use "diet coke and mentos" because it just so happens there was a diet coke on the shelf behind you when you shot the video of your newborn baby that nobody wants to see. But it's another thing to put up a video about prarie dogs and jam the keywords with everything popular... even ZeFrank's name. Unless one of those prarie dogs is named ZeFrank, I'm hereby awarding Xanderino the "First Ever Revver Boob Award."

* Keyword jamming is the act of describing your videos with words that are not related to your content but are frequently searched. It would be like me loading this post with the words hot, sexy, women, baby, hot, mamas, free, download, sexy video. I'd never do that. Britney.

Finding Your Own Videos (lost on Revver)

Just yesterday I had two people (a co-worker and brother-in-law) ask me how they can see my latest videos easily.

Unfortunately, I haven't found an easy way. A search for my username (Nalts) on Revver lists videos in random order -- as opposed to chronologically like YouTube does. The RSS feed address doesn't post the most recent three videos either. Besides, this would serve up any video that used the word "Nalts" in a tag.

I have the same problem finding my videos. If I want to dig up a video I did a few weeks ago, it can take up to 5 minutes of digging around because of the lack of an organized view via Revver. There ought to be a way to sort our videos by date, views, and title.

Has anyone figured out a way around this? I've been holding off on a "work-around" because I assumed we'd have a new Revver and this functionality would be resolved.

One last-resort would be to create a blog that posts every Revver video. Then there'd be one location to search recent videos, and RSSing it would show the most recent three. But that seems like a lot of work.

Suggestions?

That wank over at WillVideoForFood blasted Edelman (Revver's PR agency) as being incompetent and lazy. In fairness, Revver is still in beta. And the PR agency got a few great media mentions, including the following:

Two mentions in the Raritan, New Jersey's "St. Mary's Church Bulletin" last month (which garnered three unique visitors from a nearby public library).
A story on page 42 of the Dayton, Ohio "East Dayton Real Estate Listings."
A brief mention of Revver by David Scheyd on his 2-5:00 a.m. "Easy Jazz Show" in Brewton, Alabama's 850 AM Radio. The exact quote was "that song reminds me of fly fishing in a beautiful salmon-filled Revver."
The agency rode the stories of Eeepy Bird and idonothingallday, showing that if you content creators can create news... Edelman will hitch its wagon to your star.
And don't forget this October Revver launch article that remains one of the top Google search results from Revver... largely because nothing else has topped it.

Traffic at Revver has gone from 450 average daily visitors in February to nearly 510 in June (and an all-time peak of 625 on July 2). So give that Edelman some time, WillVideoForFood.com! The Edelman account lead is in the midst of pitching a great story in the Dansville, Florida "Sunrise Retirement Home" daily flier. Sunrise doesn't have access to the WorldWideWeb, but these retirees will talk about Revver for as long as they can remember it.

Courtesy of MarquisdeJolie: Mad V left Revver but remains live on Eefoof with his magic music videos and as a moderator. In this post, Mad V clarifies what content is appropriate for Eefoof. Mad V amazed Revver visitors with his magic tricks scored by copyrighted music, but then vanished to do something on television. Apparently he's saying he didn't get paid by Revver (couldn't find that in the forum , but I did find this interesting forum discussion).

Eefoof is getting some nice press, by the way, including this CNBC story and a lot of attention from www.Digg.com. But Mashable challenges its business model and calls the site ugly.

The Wall Street Journal article about Revver submitter idonothingallday is being featured on Eefoof. It's weird that Eefoof is being billed as a YouTube competitor like Revver doesn't exist.

In his spare time, Patrick Sell, a 31-year-old marketing analyst, enjoys shooting short videos of well-dressed women strolling along New York City streets, then posting them on the Web. He used to upload his productions -- about 180 to date -- on the video-sharing phenomenon YouTube, but now prefers a new service called Revver. The reason: Revver pays him.

Revver allows Mr. Sell to pocket a portion of the revenue the site takes in from ads it attaches to his clips -- an amount that now earns him about $15 a day. "My issue with YouTube is that even as the producer of the video, I can't get paid for it," says the self-styled video auteur, who asks the women for permission to film them and also posts his clips on Idonothingallday.com.

The explosive growth of Internet video is allowing people not only to find an audience for their amateur productions. Now they can actually earn money from them.

San Diego-based Eefoof Inc., launched just over a week ago, shares 50% of its profits from text ads and banner ads with users who upload their own online video clips. Shares are distributed based on the number of hits a particular video receives.
Recently launched Panjea.com, operated by Aware Media Inc., shares 50% of revenue from the ads appearing on profile pages to which users can upload their own video and audio files. Users can also sell their content via download at a price they set, in which case they earn 85% of the sale.
In May, Blip Networks Inc.'s Blip.TV began giving members half of the ad revenue it earns from the still-photograph and video ads that users can have placed at the end of their videos. Revver affixes an ad frame to the end of a video clip and gives the users 50% of the revenue generated when the ad is clicked on, whether the video is accessed from a Web site, shared across instant-messaging services or emailed between friends.

Ze Frank has earned more than $5,000 through Revver by posting his stand-up comedy shows featuring rants on pop culture, stunts and dancing.
Clips featured on sites that are helping people earn money run from someone chugging soy sauce on eeFoof.com to a child wading in a paddling pool on Blip.TV. Oddball antics, typically involving pets, are also big moneymakers (relatively speaking) in this arena. Revver, which has 30,000 videos in its system, says some users have earned more than $10,000 through the service and that many have earned more than $1,000. Eefoof.com says that a video that racks up between two and three million hits, a megablockbuster in the online world, would earn several thousand dollars from the site.

In a bold move surprising many industry insiders, Revver announced that it is changing the name of its "most watched" section to the "ZeFrank Archive."

I really thought EepyBird would get significant media pickup. It's a great story, and you need some successes like that to provide credibility. The Sacrifice of Making Videos (Hunting Series)

People often ask how I have time to make so many short videos. The truth is, it typically takes about 1-2 hours per edited minute of a video. This depends, of course, on how packaged a video is (and packaging doesn't always equate with the "viralness" of the piece. This time includes conceiving, scripting, shooting, editing, scoring and uploading. I usually skip "story boarding" because I have a mental idea and kinda let the footage dictate where the video goes.

In the case of this 3-part "how to hunt" series, however, the sacrifice wasn't just time. Here's the set up (and the output CLEARLY wasn't worth the turmoil):

We were on our last of a 4-day "vacation" in a hunting camp in Alabama. I was getting freaked out by the stuffed dead animals collected by my cousins who enjoy shooting things -- especially if they're alive and furry.
I had to beg my brother, a priest in the Vatican, to help me on the intros. He agreed on the condition that a) it took less than 5 minutes, b) he didn't speak c) he wasn't doing anything beyond the intros, and most importantly d) wasn't identified by name. Thanks, Chris.
My wife very reluctantly agreed to stop her manic packing and cleaning, so she could shoot the cougar capture. She was pretty livid because she couldn't find her shoes and she kept stepping on pine cones. Then I ripped my finger on the wire frame of the stuffed cougar.
The babysitter took our four kids for what was supposed to be a 15-minute golf-cart ride. She got lost in the woods, and we called 911 when they didn't return an hour and a half later. I finally took our rental van into the woods with the GPS and found them. They didn't seem bothered as my wife and I who were terrified.

So here they are. Not worth the experience and a bit corny. But maybe they'll get some clicks...

What Makes My Revver Income Vary?

It's impossible for us to point to exactly why Revver revenue varies during certain periods. Weeks ago we saw a dramatic spike, and it seems to have stalled according to recent posts.

Some theories raised:
> Delay of payments by Revver
> Error
> They love me, they love me not

My theory: Ad flights and prices fluctuate. We can't see how profitable certain ads are, but clearly when Revver is flighting many ads for Chappelle or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang we can assume higher "cost per clicks" to advertisers. Since advertisers typically buy a fixed inventory, it's entirely possible that Eepy Bird exhausted some campaign budgets and that might be explaining our lower income. Just because an ad appears doesn't mean an advertiser paid for it.

As Revver gets more popular, it will get better advertisers. As it gets better advertisers it can pay itself and us more. As it pays us more, we'll make it a better site. And the cycle continues (rinse, repeat).

One of the nice things about Revver is the lack of a comments functionality. Most of the feedback I get on YouTube is depressing. Although some recent comments have been nice. I've actually spent the past few days going back and forth with someone who said my videos suck and I'm a faggot. I've been responding with "I know you are but what am I" and "I am rubber you are glue, whatever you say bounces off me and back to you." It's quite fun because the guy keeps getting more and more angry.

Anyway, here's my view of what makes good feedback on a viral video. What kind of response to you get from folks on e-mail?

Votes and Views: As Unpredictable as Online Videos Themselves

We've all notices that the votes and views counts seems damaged. I got a 5 rating on a video that's never been watched (White Bucks). And I haven't been able to vote since there was still snow on the ground. I'm less concerned about this, except in two ways:
1) Does the view count mean that we may not be getting credit for ad clicks?
2) How will the competitions (KissKissBangBang and Chappelle's Block party) be judged if voting isn't working. Maybe I can't vote because my computer is cookied since I submit. But I get pink stars and no confirmation that the vote took.

Anyone else having problems?

Oh- here's White Bucks. It was designed to solicit horrible comments on YouTube.

View Envy? EepyBird's Extreme Diet Coke & Mentos

Most of us are excited if we get 100 views, and blown away when we get more than 1000. Folks, EepyBird cracked ONE MILLION. That's a decent number even on YouTube. It puts EepyBird's "Extreme Diet Coke & Mentos" video as the all-time highest viewed videos. It also put Revver "on the grid."
If I had to guess, I'd say they earned easily $10-$30,000 in several days. Considering a 2-liter is about $150, and a pack of mentos is 60 cents, I'd say the ROI was strong on this one.

I have to acknowledge my wife's friend Stacy for this video of a baby bird. It's interesting on two levels: 1) You don't often see a bird this young, and now that Stacy's daughter's scent is all over it I imagine it's mama won't touch it. 2) I give Stacy credit for including the last piece of the clip- where her son tries to strangle her daughter.

Almost every time I try to make a video there's some form of attack between my kids, but I edit them out. Kudos for including that part, Stacy. I hope your dog enjoyed his lunch.

How Much Money Do I Make Per View?

Revver is on a pay-per-click (PPC) model, meaning no money is exchanged unless a viewer completed a video and clicks the ad. As someone who buys online media, I'd say they're leaving "money on the table." There's a value in impressions too.
That said, what are folks finding is their view/earnings ration? In other words, take your total views and divide them by the money you've made.
ROUGHLY I think a view is worth about 1 cents. That's because click-thru is about 3-4 percent last I calculated (although that's tough to determine anymore). So 100 views gets you 3-4 clicks which are about 30 cents.
Anyone else have other data? Clearly this depends on:
1) The quality of the ad
2) The location of the video (theoretically, videos on Revver get fewer clicks than those that live elsewhere).
3) The view/completion ratio- for videos greater than a few minutes, probably very few people will complete it and see the ad. For example, if you click the dollar art above, you'll get my 3-minute "Rich on Revver" video. You probably won't complete it but my "views" will jump.
4) The quality of the video (although I'm not inclined to think this is a big factor.

Create a Channel of Your Revver Videos (Magnify Networks)

I just found this site, Magnify Networks, via an AdSense ad on someone's blog. They're in soft launch, but it's really interesting. You know all of those things you'd LIKE to do with Revver (community, sharing, rating, filtering, sequencing, etc.)? I think this is the missing link.

I set up a Magnify page (it's free) and brought a few random videos to it. Other people can post too, which is great. I suppose I could have one for all of my stuff and another for people that share my interest. I haven't gotten my head around the whole concept, but here's the basics:
1) It's free
2) It allows you to organize videos from a variety of sites (Revver, YouTube, ect.)
3) You don't have to upload a video if it's already on the web- just give it your Revver embeded tag that you've probably never used before... it's under the video in HTML code.
4) Magnify gives you a URL that has all of your videos -- with RevTag entact (which hopefully includes my affiliate fee in addition to the revenue tied to the video itself).

Pretty cool- an easier way to get my friends directly to my videos without having them sort through some of the lame stuff and old stuff. Maybe I can use it as an RSS feed so people can easily see thumbnails of the latest vids. I suspect there's a lot more I can do with this once my thick mind makes its way around this new concept.

Eepy Bird Puts Revver on Map

I have no idea how EepyBird was able to attract so many views (on the ol' Mentos/Coke trick), but this is a Revver Record. Check out the amount of people that have been exposed to Revver as a result of this. And try to imagine what these folks are kicking to their PayPal accounts. Now try to imagine how much they'd made if they did it with YouTube.

Thanks, EepyBird. I can't figure out why more sites aren't using Revver considering the fact that it's not just free video serving... it's profitable.
